The first AmberNet server was called irc.jbvas.org. Back then, it was started and maintained by sjk. Since it was a standalone server (no other servers linked) it wasn't really to be called a network in its early days.
sjk went on a search for other server administrators who wanted to link to his new network and so, he found Ribs.
All was set, there were linked servers and people could join. But there was no name! Ribs invented the AmberNet name. Since it started with an 'A', it would be high on the alphabetic rankings.
It is hard to find an exact date/year but the ambernet.org domain name was registered in late March 2005.
Both persons knew each other from the UnderNet network and so AmberNet would become an UnderNet spin-off. Lots of users from the UnderNet network switched over to AmberNet and found a new home.
In 2007 the network got listed into the mIRC server list. This was good news and new visitors found their way to our network. Unfortunately it also brought us people with bad intentions and so, the network experienced its first drone attack.
As a result, the round-robin was introduced, irc.ambernet.se and the load was divided over the different connected servers. Later on, the server operators found an easy way to fight the drones and where able to get rid of them in no time.
Today's setup is different from UnderNet but in our opinion, better.
Where UnderNet has the IRCu, AmberNet runs on Ratbox.
Where UnderNet has it's GNUworld, AmberNet has the ATheme services.
Today, the network holds 5 servers, serving an average of 20 channels
Feel free to give pay us visit, hang out or even register your own channel!
Anyhow, welcome to AmberNet!
